Books that Should be Made into Movies

The Road Through the Wall by Shirley Jackson
Shirley Jackson's first novel takes us into the well hidden dark side of 1940s suburbia as only she can.  While The Lottery or The Haunting of Hill House most likely come to mind when remembering Jackson, this book would give Revolutionary Road a run for its money.

Dr. Franklin's Island by Ann Halam
CoverShut the front door this book was so awesome! Not only do I have a hankering for anyone who loosely bases their novels off of anything by H.G. Wells, but to do so so creepily and horrifying while writing in the Young Adult Fiction genre? Yes, please!
I would love for someone to make this into a movie because a) it's a great twist on The Island of Dr. Moreau by turning humans into animals, and b) how terrifying would the scene be when the girl starts changing into a bird, i.e. teeth falling out and her breastbone breaking through her skin?  And those chilling moments when they try to convince each other that they're on an adventure instead of being tortured, mutilated, and waiting for vivisection.  Oh, it just gives me shudders thinking about it!

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn
If you have not yet read this book, do yourself a favor and go read it this second.  Probably one of my favorites of all time, this novel is based around a circus couple who get the bright idea of creating their own family freak show with results that turn out both amazing and catastrophic.  It is dark and funny, sad and triumphant, and just all around epic. If you're like me, by which I mean fascinated with sideshows, cults, and the supernatural among other strange oddities, then this book is right up your alley.
The only reason I hesitate at the thought of this becoming a movie is that, like the book, it would need to be extraordinary and truly capture its brilliance.  It can't be passed off to a director who would botch it by not seeing its full potential on the screen and just phone it in.  I'm talking to you Tim Burton, don't you even look at this book!  Unless we're going to hop in the Delorean and turn the clocks back to the days of Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, I don't want you anywhere near it! No touch!
But if there is a director out there who could appreciate this novel for the gem it is, then all I can say is: You Should Make This Into A Movie!

Hater by David Moody
I was told by a book jacket that this was going to be made into a movie and I will not be satisfied until this reaches fruition.  This book was awesome!  Let me just give you what you need to know: Zombies.  But wait!  Not really zombies, but people who for seemingly no reason one day start killing everyone around them and are thus coined "haters".  No one knows who's on the right side and no one can be trusted, nor are they safe. It spirals into a case of genetics, government conspiracies, and good old fashioned rage. I'm about to start reading the third book in the series and I'm itching for a movie version of the first.  Come on Guillermo Del Toro, I was promised this book would be made into a movie!  So do it already!
