Congo by Michael Crichton

Alyssa's Now Infamous Book and a Movie kicks off with Michael Crichton's Congo.  I picked up this book again after repeatedly starting and stopping it my whole life.  I would always finish the first section where the guy's eye goes flying out of his head and eventually get bored when science entered the picture.  But man!  I'm so glad I gave this book another try, as it was awesome and I couldn't put it down.  Firstly, let me say that I love Michael Crichton.  Who doesn't love a science and technology lesson (even if it is from the 1980s) while learning about a horrifying breed of skull crusher apes in a lost city of diamonds?  And secondly, the storytelling is fantastic.  It had mystery, action, and cool facts. Even though I already knew what was going to happen, by the end of the novel, I was as obsessed with The Lost City of Zinj as the characters were.

Therefore, as soon as I finished the final page I geared up Netflix to watch the movie from 1995.  Move over Jurassic Park!  How did this movie not get a ride at Universal?  There are killer gorillas, erupting volcanoes, and that guy from Nip/Tuck.  I didn't even mind that they made Laura Linney's portrayal of the diamond grubbing Karen Ross into a loving, kind, humanitarian looking for her estranged fiance, blah, blah, blah.  And bringing in Tim Curry's character as the creepy Romanian, obsessed with the legend was actually a pretty cool addition.  While I was a little disappointed by the end (I wanted more focus on the mythology of Solomon's Mine and Zinj), I have to say Crichton's books translate well into movies even after a decade and a half.
